Possible activities in Heidelberg

The castle in Heidelberg

The castle of Heidelberg is one of the main tourist attractions of Germany (more information). The entrance to the castle gardens is free, entrance fee for the castle is about 8 Euro.

Castle illuminations

Two days before the conference, at Saturday July 8th, the famous Castle illuminations take place which only take place 3 times in a year.

Heidelberg old city

The conference venue IWH is located in the old city of Heidelberg with many interesting places like the old university, the Peter's church, many bars and restaurants, the Marstall.

Hiking and hills

The conference venue IWH is located near the mountain railway Heidelberg. The first station is the Heidelberg castle, while the second station is the hill Königstuhl, which offers several walking paths.

We also recommend a walk on "Philosophers' Walk" (German: Philosophenweg) on the other (northern) side of the Neckar, with scenic views of the old town and the castle.

River Neckar

On the river Neckar, there exist tourism ship traffic which visits Heidelberg and the neighbour cities Eberbach and Neckarsteinach. Tickets for such a side trip can be directly bought at the ships.
